Joey was born in Dothan, Alabama. He graduated from the University of Alabama with a BS degree in finance and then attended the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama.
While at Cumberland he served as Director of the Cumberland Trial Advocacy Board and was selected to be in Who's Who of American Law Students. While in law school Joey attended the University of Kent in Canterbury, England where he studied the European Common Market and Comparative Law of the United States and Great Britain under the direction of former Appellate Judge and Solicitor General of the United States, Ken Starr.
After law school Joey practiced as a Civil Defense Attorney with the firm of Cobb and Shealy, PC practicing in the areas of civil litigation with a concentration in the areas of wrongful death, products liability, personal injury and worker's comp. In 1999 Joey left the defense side of litigation and started his current firm representing individuals who have been injured or killed through the wrongful conduct of others. Many of his cases involve defective products and vehicle accidents, but he regularly represent those who have suffered work place injuries. Joey also represents many businesses that have suffered damages through the negligent but often times intentional conduct by other businesses.
Bar memberships include the Alabama and Florida State Bar; U.S. District Court of Alabama, all districts; U.S. District Court of Florida, Northern District; U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit; U.S. Court of Federal Claims; and the U.S. Supreme Court. Joey has also handled cases in Arizona, Mississippi, Georgia, Texas and Connecticut.
Joey has been recognized by his hard work and success by being certified as a member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum and the Multi-Million Dollar Advocates Forum. Membership is limited to attorneys who have won million and multi-million dollar verdicts, awards and settlements. Fewer than 1% of U.S. lawyer are members. Recently Joey was selected for inclusion in the 2011 Alabama Super Lawyers. Inclusion in this group is based upon a statewide nomination process, review of your resume, professional achievement, and the evaluation by your peers. Only five percent of Alabama Attorneys are chosen each year.
Joey has also served as a Bar Commissioner to the Alabama State Bar representing the 20th Judicial Circuit. He was elected to this position by the attorneys of his circuit and for which he served three consecutive terms before stepping down. While on the Board of Bar Commissioners he served on many different committees including Chairman of the Alabama Lawyer Referral Service Board and was appointed to serve on the Disciplinary Panel for the Alabama State Bar. Joey also serves as Municipal Judge for the city of Newton, Alabama, and is a member of the Wiregrass Inns of Court.
Joey's many other activities include being a member of the Dothan Leadership Class of the Dothan Chamber of Commerce; President of the Young Lawyers for the 20th Judicial Circuit; Boys and Girls Club Director; Dothan-Houston County Rotary Club; Adjunct Professor Troy University System; Chairman of the Dothan Area Cystic Fibrosis Walkathon; Christian Legal Society; and Coach of numerous youth Baseball, Basketball and Football teams.
Joey's hobbies include sports, reading and traveling with his wife Louise and their four children.
