Growing up, Benjamin W. Akery’s family moved around a good bit, following the path of his father’s industrial safety career. “Moving to six new states growing up taught me to be comfortable in all sorts of situations,” says Ben. That comfort has extended to the legal world.

In 2008 Ben joined the venerable Steinberg Law Firm, which was founded in the 1920s on the principle that individuals deserved representation against forces bigger than themselves.

Ben became a partner at the firm in 2016. At Steinberg, he is concentrating on personal injury, workers’ compensation, and social security disability law.

Ben earned his undergraduate degree from the College of Charleston, where he was a member of the Communications Honor Society. Ben was a scholarship athlete in both basketball and baseball his first two years of college. In 2008, he graduated from Emory University School of Law. While at Emory he served as staff attorney at the Indigent Criminal Defense Clinic representing individuals in Georgia’s criminal courts, he also received the Morton H. Aronson Franchise Law Award.

Ben is a member of the South Carolina Bar, Charleston County Bar, and Berkeley County Bar where he served on the board of directors and as president of the young lawyers division. He serves on the board of governors for the South Carolina Association for Justice and is a member of the Injured Workers Advocates.

Prior to joining the Steinberg Law Firm, Adam practiced workers’ compensation defense law in the catastrophic injury and major case unit of a law firm, defending multiple, large insurance companies. Working on the defense side, he learned the tactics and strategies insurance companies and their attorneys use to minimize and deny benefits to injured workers. Now, he uses this knowledge to help fight for injured workers and to get them the compensation they deserve.

Adam is a member of two legal associations, the South Carolina Bar Association and the Charleston County Bar Association. He is also an active member of Injured Workers’ Advocates, the Workers’ Injury Law & Advocacy Group, and the South Carolina Workers’ Compensation Educational Association. Following law school, Elliotte served as a law clerk for a federal district court judge in the Northern District of Alabama and then served as a law clerk for Justice Kaye Hearn on the South Carolina Supreme Court.

Prior to joining the Steinberg Law Firm in 2018, Elliotte was a litigator in the Charleston office of a highly regarded regional law firm where he primarily worked defending several of the largest national homebuilders in construction defect cases. He also handled a wide variety of other legal matters ranging from drafting construction contracts to litigating business disputes and personal injury claims. Elliotte concentrated on construction defect disputes often involving many parties and complex issues. He gained invaluable knowledge and experience of how construction defect claims are tried and how builders defend against them. But at heart he wasn’t satisfied representing builders, and he joined the Steinberg Law Firm to use his knowledge to help homeowners confronted with construction problems.

Elliotte is a member of the South Carolina Bar’s Construction Law Section and the American Bar Association’s Forum on Construction Law.
