To Michael P. Mazanetz, the greatest personal professional reward comes when a client’s long wait for oftentimes badly needed Social Security disability benefits comes to an end with a decision in their favor.

“Some of those people have worked 25-30 years, and they’ve had some accident at work or at home or they’ve been diagnosed with a serious illness, and all of a sudden the money stops coming,” he says. “It can be a long process to go through, so when they get that news, it’s always a highlight.”

Atty. Mazanetz is a Mahoning Valley native, raised in Newton Falls, where he still lives. As a boy, Michael knew that he wanted to be a lawyer who would help the kind of working people he knew — his father worked in a bearing factory — and he focused hard on his studies to achieve that goal.

He graduated magna cum laude from Mount Union College in 2005 with a B.A. degree in political science, and then attended the University of Akron School of Law, where he was associate editor of the Akron Law Review and graduated cum laude in 2008.

“Every Social Security disability claimant deserves to have their interest represented in a diligent, comprehensive, and personal manner,” he says. “It is my goal to provide this exhaustive representation for each and every client I work with.”

When he’s away from the office, Atty. Mazanetz contributes to his hometown of Newton Falls in two ways: He is an assistant coach for the Newton Falls High School Tigers varsity basketball team and also takes appointment work representing indigent criminal defendants in Newton Falls Municipal Court when scheduling permits.

I decided that I wanted to be an attorney after working in the steel mill for several years and saw how people were treated in the workplace. I felt they needed representation as no one was standing up for them and the employer always had representation. I decided to be an attorney to help people and to win claims at all cost. I have represented my clients at all levels from the administrative process all the way to the Ohio Supreme court where I have argued several cases successfully in front of the Supreme Court on behalf of my clients.
I started working towards my law degree by attending The Ohio State University. I received my Bachelor’s Degree in 1984. I then attended Cleveland-Marshall College of Law and received my Juris Doctorate in 1987. I was admitted to the Ohio Bar in 1987 and celebrated 25 years of practicing law in 2012.
In the past 25 years, I have been admitted to practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals, Sixth Circuit and U.S. District Court, Northern District of Ohio. I am member of the Ohio State Bar Association, Small Practice Division; the Ohio State Bar Association Workers Compensation Committee; a member of the Trumbull County Bar Association, Executive Committee; Member of the Portage County Bar Association and a Member of the Mahoning - Trumbull county Academy of Trial Lawyers.
I am married with two children and reside in McDonald, Ohio. I am involved in my children’s sports and have coached several softball and baseball teams. I love my job and spending time with my family and our dog, Buddy.

Following graduation from law school, I earned the honor of serving as a Judicial Law Clerk to the Honorable Peter C. Economus of the United States District Court, Northern District of Ohio. During my time with the court, I analyzed federal civil matters and assisted the judge in drafting memoranda of law, court opinions, and court orders. In 2008, I joined a national shopping center development and management company as in-house counsel. While there, I researched and explained changes in current laws and regulations to department heads and other corporate counsel; as well as advised corporate heads on legal compliance requirements.

One of the greatest honors a law graduate can earn is to serve as a judicial law clerk to a federal judge. I was fortunate enough to be granted this experience before embarking on my legal career. As a judicial clerk, I saw first-hand the inner workings of the court--particularly, what factors the judge takes into account in coming to a decision and what drafting and writing techniques are most effective. This knowledge, experienced by a small percentage of attorneys, greatly enriches my advocacy for my clients.
